Advanced Composite Materials with Special Destinations

Advanced Composite Materials with Special Destinations

The objective of the program, taught in Romanian, is to provide master’s students with knowledge of high-performance composite materials, as required by the wide variety of applications in which they are used.

The main objectives of this program are:
- to provide knowledge regarding matrices and reinforcing materials used in the production of composite materials, emphasizing the role that ensuring matrix-reinforcing material compatibility plays in obtaining high-performance composites;
- developing skills for the optimal utilization of composition-structure-property correlations in the production of high-performance composite materials, in accordance with their intended applications;
- acquisition by master’s students of knowledge related to the design, fabrication, and characterization of advanced composite materials for specialized applications, such as: ceramic nanocomposites, composite materials for medicine, polymer matrix composites, composites and nanocomposites with applications in the chemical industry, high-performance composites with binder matrices, composites and nanocomposites with electrical and magnetic properties for microelectronics and optoelectronics, etc.;
- providing knowledge regarding the recovery and recycling of certain types of waste derived from composite materials, including the utilization of waste from other fields in the production of composite materials, while maintaining the specific performance characteristics required by their intended applications;
- understanding the possibilities for immobilizing waste containing toxic substances within composite materials and the implications of incorporating such substances on the performance of composite materials.

Acquired Skills and Abilities
The interdisciplinary master’s program in Advanced Composite Materials for Special Applications, through the structure of its curriculum and the content of the courses included, ensures the acquisition of the following general competencies:
- knowledge and skills in designing composite materials that deliver performance in line with their intended application;
- skills in characterizing the composition, structure, and key properties of advanced composite materials.

The specific competencies, as derived from the course descriptions included in the curriculum, relate to:
the ability to optimize the design—based on the selection of constituents and taking their compatibility into account—of composite materials such as polymer composites and nanocomposites, ceramic nanocomposites, composites and nanocomposites with applications in the chemical industry, high-performance composites with a binder matrix, composites and nanocomposites with electrical and magnetic properties for microelectronics and optoelectronics, composite materials for medicine, etc.;

the ability to process special-purpose composite materials, including through appropriate unconventional methods;

skills in structural investigation and characterization of the main properties of composite materials such as those mentioned above.

Employment Opportunities
Our graduates can be employed by:
- companies in the cement, lime, ceramics, and glass industries, as well as testing laboratories, factory laboratories, concrete plants, aggregate plants, etc. These industries are all privately owned, with many belonging to multinational corporations that offer attractive employment and professional development opportunities;
- research institutes.

There are quite a few cases where our graduates start their own small- or medium-sized manufacturing businesses or pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees to optimize their own businesses.

Our students gain hands-on experience with research and production activities during their technical internships, which take place at factories and specialized research institutes in Bucharest and throughout the country.
Further Professional Development of Graduation
After completing the master’s program, professional development can continue through doctoral studies; the department currently has seven doctoral advisors in the field of Chemical Engineering.
Human Resources and Logistics for Student Education
The SIMONa department is composed of faculty members with a high level of professional expertise, acquired through many years of teaching and research, who carry on the tradition of the School of Silicate Chemistry and Technology, founded over 60 years ago by Professor Serban Solacolu.

The faculty is committed to promoting scientific research, technological development, and educational innovation through national and international collaboration. Currently, the department has partnerships with prestigious universities in France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

The department’s facilities enable professional training at the European level and include state-of-the-art equipment and resources valued at over 4 million euros.
