On October 19, 2026, the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnologies hosted a scientific event dedicated to presenting the findings of research conducted by a team from the National Research and Development Institute for Chemistry and Petrochemistry (ICECHIM) in Bucharest.

The event centered on the paper "Beyond the WHO Priority Toxicants: A Systematic Review of Harmful and Potentially Harmful Constituents in IQOS Aerosols," which was published in 2026 in the international journal Toxics following a peer-review process.

The paper provides a systematic review of the scientific literature regarding the chemical composition of aerosols generated by IQOS systems, focusing on harmful and potentially harmful constituents identified in published studies. The analysis was carried out in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines and examines both the available data on compounds identified in the aerosols and the variations in the methodologies employed across existing studies.

The paper highlights discrepancies among the experimental protocols used in the analyzed studies, underscoring the need for better harmonization of methods for aerosol generation, collection, and analysis to facilitate the comparison of results obtained by different research teams.

The presentation was delivered by Dr. Habil. Radu Claudiu Fierăscu—a Senior Researcher (Grade I) and Technical Director at ICECHIM Bucharest—who is a co-author of the paper and a doctoral supervisor within the Doctoral School of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnologies at POLITEHNICA Bucharest.

During the meeting, the approach used for the systematic review was presented, along with the criteria applied for the selection and evaluation of the scientific literature, the key research findings, and the methodological aspects relevant to the chemical characterization of aerosols.

The event was aimed at academic staff, researchers, doctoral candidates, students, and specialists with an interest in analytical chemistry, toxicology, and methods for characterizing aerosols generated by heated tobacco products.
